An Italian architect said he is poised to start construction on a new skyscraper in Dubai that will be “the world’s first building in motion,” an 80-story tower with revolving floors that give it an ever-shifting shape. The spinning floors, hung like rings around an immobile cement core, would offer residents a constantly changing view of the Persian Gulf and the city’s futuristic skyline. A few penthouse villas would spin on command using a voice-activated computer. The motion of the rest of the building would be choreographed in patterns that could be altered over time. Speaking at a news conference in New York on Tuesday, the building’s designer, David Fisher, declared that his tower will revolutionize the way skyscrapers are made — a claim that might strike some as excessively bold. Fisher acknowledges that he is not well known, has never built a skyscraper before and hasn’t practiced architecture regularly in decades. But he insisted his lack of experience wouldn’t stop him from completing the project, which has attracted top design talent, including Leslie E. Robertson, the structural engineer for the World Trade Center and the Shanghai World Financial Center. “I did not design skyscrapers, but I feel ready to do so,” Fisher said. Twisting floors are just one of several futuristic features in the building, the first of several Fisher hopes to build with a similar design. Giant wind turbines installed between every floor, he said, will generate enough electricity to …

Snowder & Risal für 10 Tage in New York City. Vom 13.03 bis 23.03.2008. Flug über München-Amsterdam-New York City.

In this new video tour of New York City from the series “All Along Broadway” (see the first two episodes: “Wall street” ( www.youtube.com ) and “Union Square” ( www.youtube.com ), David Hill from New York Habitat continues his stroll along Broadway and presents Midtown Manhattan and its famous squares: Madison Square, Herald Square and Greeley Square. Broadway is one of the most famous roads in the world. It runs the length of Manhattan, from its southern tip to the northern tip of the island and continues in the Bronx, crossing many of Manhattan’s neighborhoods. History The oldest “street” in New York City, Broadway was originally used as a trail by the Native Americans who lived here; later it was used by the Dutch settlers to travel to the northern forests to hunt. Madison Square Walking north along Broadway, you will reach a large intersection at Fifth Avenue and 23rd St. which creates a big square. This is Madison Square, named after the 4th US President, James Madison. It was here in 1842 where some of the first amateur baseball games were ever played. They used a vacant lot in the north part of the square (corner of Madison Avenue & 27th Street). Later, the original New York Knickerbocker Baseball club, one of the first professional baseball teams, started right here. Flatiron or Fuller Building One of the most beautiful buildings in this square is the Fuller Building, designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. It was named “Fuller” after the …

“Greatest Cities of the World with Griff Rhys Jones” – To find out what makes New York, New York, Griff spends a typical 24 hours meeting New Yorkers, discovering the citys secrets, experiencing its culture and diversity and trying to understand what makes New York a great city. Griff visits Grand Central Station and gets his hands dirty with the New York Sanitation Department. He explains the 20th century battle of tycoons building the highest buildings in New York and visits the Woolworth building. New York is a city of contrasts, and after visiting the Carlyle Hotel where a suite costs over 00 a night Griff travels across town to the Lincoln Correctional Facility. In Queens, Griff visits the Steinway factory and in Harlem, he auditions for a rehab centre choir. As day turns to night, Griff goes backstage at a glitzy Broadway production. He is then invited to attend a traditional Russian Jewish wedding and meets the family and friends who have made New York their home.

All photo’s are copyrighted as my own (C). They are also shown in the order they were taken in the hope that I show also the side of New York that isn’t really explored by most tourists. There were only ever two songs that I could use for showing these pictures in a slide show and so I used both of them. I DO NOT OWN THESE OR HAVE ANY RIGHTS TO THEM!!! I spent a fortnight on the East Coast of the states over easter with a few friends, where we visited; New York, Boston and New Hampshire. While in NY, we stayed in a great hotel in the middle of the city (PARK CENTRAL HOTEL). All those who have actually been to New York will actually know how mind blowing this city actually is, seeing so many different and awe inspiring things, each one as mind blowing as the last. I treasure the sentence that I read in a tour book a few weeks back that said; “As corny and as crazy as it sounds, being in New York is a little like falling in love”.
